eSIM / SIM Card
β Buy a China eSIM before you fly so you have data the moment you land. Airalo and Nomad offer reliable options with no physical SIM needed.
β Most iPhones from XS onwards and many Android flagships support eSIM. Verify in your phone settings before purchasing.
β China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom sell tourist SIM cards at major airports. Bring your passport.
Alipay / WeChat Pay
β Alipay now allows foreigners to link Visa/Mastercard directly. Download the app and complete identity verification before your trip.
β WeChat Pay also supports foreign cards. Link your card in the WeChat app under 'Me > Pay > Wallet'.
β While mobile payments dominate, some small vendors and rural areas still prefer cash. Exchange currency before departure or at airport ATMs.
Essential Apps
β Google Maps has limited functionality in China. Download Maps.me with offline China maps, or use Baidu Maps for more accurate local data.
β Download the Chinese language pack for offline use. The camera translation feature is invaluable for menus and signs.
β DiDi is China's Uber equivalent and supports English. Set up your account and link a payment method before arrival.
β WeChat is essential for communication in China. Many businesses, hotels, and locals communicate primarily through WeChat.
Visa / Entry
β Apply at your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate. Processing typically takes 4-7 business days. Bring passport, photo, itinerary, and hotel bookings.
β Your country currently has visa-free access to China. Verify the latest policy and duration limits on the official Chinese embassy website before travel.
β If transiting through major Chinese cities, you may qualify for 144-hour visa-free transit. Check eligible ports and conditions.
β Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned stay. Check expiry date and renew if needed.
β Fill in the arrival/departure card distributed on your flight. Have your hotel address and contact number ready.
Other Essentials
β Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies is strongly recommended. Ensure it covers China and includes medical evacuation.
β China uses Type A and Type C outlets at 220V/50Hz. Most modern electronics handle dual voltage, but check your devices.
β No mandatory vaccinations for China, but hepatitis A/B and typhoid are recommended. Consult your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.
β Police: 110, Ambulance: 120, Fire: 119. Save your country's embassy contact in China. Note your hotel address in Chinese characters.
